• Planning is the first step on any project. Our design team collects and filters all the relevant project data and strategizes accordingly. We kick off the project with our client team and we work closely with you throughout the entire process.

    • The Homonym graphic design team meets with you in an informal work session to define and understand the design needs and opportunities for the project.

The intent of this session is to develop a shared vision and direction for the project and a concise scope of work.

Once the information has been gathered, Homonym identifies overall themes and potential strategies, which serve as the roadmap for the design planning phase.

    • Homonym works with you to develop a communication strategy and information exchange protocol that will be implemented and used for the life of the project. This alleviates confusion during the exchange of project information and establishes clear lines of communication.

For wayfinding projects, Homonym uses the design planning phase to determine the critical messaging points and landmarks for system users and develop hypothetical user journeys through the site/building spaces to determine wayfinding strategies and system solutions for efficient navigation and identification throughout the site.

  • Homonym Design Process

At Homonym we break down every project into three distinct phases, each with two sub-phases.

A phase could be two days or two months. What matters is the process as a method for approaching visual design and wayfinding problems.

  • As the project enters the design phase, concepts are further refined and reviewed with the client as needed. This iterative process is integral to the success of a project and provides for the most collaboration between the design team and the client team.

    • After approval of the design planning phase, we define additional project elements and develop our conceptual design directions and a “sign types” list. The two concept directions focus on selected program elements, which best define the system approach and applications.

    • Based on the ideas and design directions established in the concept design phase, a single concept direction is chosen by the client for further development during the schematic design phase.

During this phase, Homonym refines and expands the selected concept into a comprehensive family for the entire wayfinding system, focusing on targeted project areas. We then present this design scheme to the client team for review.

  • The final phase of any design project is the documentation phase. Throughout this period of the project, design elements receive final approval and are prepared for final delivery. The process is still an iterative one though, and final design refinement occurs during this phase.

    • Based on the client team’s feedback from the schematic design presentation, Homonym further develops the sign types and program elements.

    • Upon approval by the client team of all project elements, Homonym prepares final design intent drawings, indicating appropriate dimensions, materials, colors and construction and installation guidelines. The design intent documents are presented to the Client team for review and approval.
